Bomb squad descends as 'live' grenade pulled from Derbyshire canal

A bomb squad swooped on a Derbyshire town after a ‘live’ hand grenade was pulled from a nearby canal.

The hand grenade was found at Erewash Canal in Ilkeston, near Hallam Fields, by a member of the public at about 2pm this afternoon (Sunday, May 3).

Police and bomb disposal units from Chilwell in Nottinghamshire arrived a short time after and remained at the scene for several hours.

The resident who found the device said they were magnet-fishing with family at the canal when they made the discovery.

According to the Derby Telegraph, the grenade was a Number 34 grenade and an X-ray confirmed it was ‘live’.

The age of the grenade has not been confirmed- but it is understood this type of device was introduced during the First World War and is also known as an ‘egg grenade’ due to its oval shape.
