Everett Carty, 63, “ran down an alleyway” after being spotted “driving at speed” and pulled over by officers in Bolsover.

Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court heard Carty - who also gave police false details - was found 15 minutes later in the rear garden of a property on Springfield Crescent.

A police check revealed the Bolsover man was serving a driving ban in place until September 2022.

The court heard Carty had bought his Peugeot 207 while disqualified and was on his way to a meeting to bid for a construction contract when he was pulled over.

Carty’s solicitor Denney Lau told magistrates the 63-year-old had asked a friend to drive him on the night of the offence - August 8 last year - but had been “let down”.

Mr Lau said: “He accepts that at 63 years old he should have known better.”

The solicitor said self-employed Carty had become ill with Covid in 2019 and his business “dramatically-reduced” as a result.

Mr Lau added: “He has been trying very hard to get the work back.

“He works alone and employs a single person to work with him but has been in real financial difficulty during lockdown.”

Carty, of Springfield Crescent, Bolsover, admitted driving while banned and without insurance.
