They want to thank the man, who was passing Matlock Green in his car during the incident on August 1, when two officers tried to arrest James Porter, 31, of Leacroft, Winster.

While officers attempted to handcuff the man – who had a warrant out for his arrest for not attending court – he assaulted one male officer and kicked him in the head.

After witnessing the incident, the passerby pulled over, jumped out of his car and helped officers arrest Porter.

But the man left the scene before the officers were able
to take his details and thank him.

Porter was found guilty of ABH and ordered to pay £150 compensation on August 2 at Chesterfield Magistrates court.

He was originally supposed to appear in court on July 31 for possession of a small amount of cannabis.
