Confusion over Chesterfield Hotel company

Confusion surrounds why the company which previously operated Chesterfield Hotel remains active - nearly 18 months after business ceased.

GS Trading VI (Chesterfield) Ltd still lists its address as Chesterfield Hotel on Malkin Street, according to Companies House.

This is despite the fact the iconic property was bought by a new firm, Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd, for £900,000 in April.

A spokesman for Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd confirmed it was not linked to GS Trading VI (Chesterfield) Ltd.

Companies House has been made aware of the issue.

GS Trading VI (Chesterfield) Ltd could not be reached for a comment.

As previously reported, Prestige Hotels (Midlands) Ltd is currently carrying out £300,000 of repair and refurbishment work on the historic building while considering its future use.

Chesterfield Hotel has lain empty for more than two years as the business which previously owned the property, GS Estates VI Ltd, collapsed into receivership amid financial problems.

The receivers put the building up for sale early last year.

As previously reported, Steven Green - who founded GS Estates VI Ltd - is currently serving a seven-year jail sentence for a 'deplorable' crime. He insists he is innocent.

Forty-five members of staff lost their jobs when Chesterfield Hotel closed and workers are currently going through the employment tribunal process over alleged unpaid wages and redundancy payouts.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear if customers left hundreds of pounds out of pocket when the hotel's leisure centre shut in 2014 will be refunded.

Chesterfield Hotel, formerly the Station Hotel, opened in 1877 and closed on January 31, 2015, making it one of the town's longest-running businesses.

Over the years, it was a venue for thousands of occasions - including weddings, birthday celebrations and Christmas parties - and was a major employer.

According to a recent online poll by the Derbyshire Times, the majority of respondents would like to see Chesterfield Hotel reopen as a hotel.
