Computer con-men strike Derbyshire

Residents are being warned to be vigilant following a spike in complaints about computer con-men stealing personal details.

Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team has received a number of complaints from people saying they have been targeted by telephone cold callers claiming to be from ‘The World Wide Web Technical Department’.

The caller tells the victim that their computer is at risk from a security threat and offers to carry out a free check.

Their aim is to get the victim to allow remote access to their computer – this gives con-men access to personal information held on the computer, including account log-in information and bank details, which can be used to commit fraud.

Anyone who believes they have fallen victim to the scam should immediately contact their bank and consider getting their computer checked by a reputable engineer.

To report a suspicious incident people can contact Action Fraud on 0845 070 0707.
