Clay Cross pensioner, 92, wins prestigious national care award

Albert Dooley received the ‘unpaid carer’ accolade for his devotion towards his wife and helping other residents at Morton Grange care home in Alfreton.

Mr Dooley, who is 93 in May, drives to Morton Grange twice every day to visit his wife – and volunteers to call the bingo on a weekly basis.

He has also assisted on trips to Southwell Racecourse and participating in other activities at the home.

He was nominated by proprietor at the care home, June Rye, who said: “Mr Dooley really is exceptional in his devotion to his wife and patience and kindness toward other residents. He seems to especially enjoy our regular Thursday ‘pub night’ - a social evening with visiting entertainers which encourages relatives, staff and members of the wider community to come and see residents and enjoy live music together.”

Mr Dooley is a lifelong Derby County Football Club supporter who has a keen interest in history and politics.

His visits and interactions with residents are the highlight of their day and he especially enjoys sharing the crossword puzzle in his daily newspaper with them.

Registered manager at Morton Grange, Shanci Mathew, said “Albert is a very special man who deserves recognition for his incredible dedication to his wife”.
