Chesterfield singer, adored by so many, takes her own life aged 20

Georgia Bird, who was born in Chesterfield and lived in the town for several years before moving to America, tragically passed away in Cyprus - where she was fulfilling her dream of being a singer - on May 6.

She was just 20 and had struggled with mental health problems for a number of years.

Her grandmother, Ruth Bird, of Old Whittington, told the Derbyshire Times: "Georgia was a very caring girl who, despite her own battle, supported a lot of people who were suffering from mental health problems.

"She had an amazing voice - she always wanted to be famous - and was in Cyprus doing what she loved.

"Sadly, she lost the battle to her demons."

Mrs Bird added: "Georgia had the ability to make everyone feel special.

"Everyone who met her fell in love with her.

"She was a bit of a practical joker and had so many friends, both here in Chesterfield and overseas - she was very popular.

"She loved animals, liked tattoos and enjoyed partying - and idolised her family.

"We’ve all been left devastated by the tragic news.

"Georgia will be very sadly missed."

Mrs Bird said Georgia had previously sought help for her mental health problems - but nobody knew she was going to take her own life.

Online, many tributes have flooded in for Georgia, who was a pupil at Mary Swanwick school and previously worked in the Beach bar and Spa Lane Vaults in Chesterfield town centre.

On the social networking site Facebook, Chantell Garratt said: "She was a fun girl."

Joan Cockayne said: "Sleep tight, beautiful."

A number of her friends will take part in a midnight walk in Chesterfield on June 23 to remember Georgia and raise money for Mind, the mental health charity.
