Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard how Johnathan Cowlishaw, 22, of Gypsy Lane, Old Whittingon, Chesterfield, had been in the Vibe Bar, on Holywell Street, when he attacked Owen Palfreyman and Jonathan Horbury.

Prosecuting solicitor Becky Allsop said Mr Horbury was in the smoking area and said the defendant came over and accused him of staring and he became more aggressive.

Cowlishaw raised his voice and punched Mr Horbury catching his left collar bone, according to Mrs Allsop, and the defendant left after also punching Mr Palfreyman.

Mrs Allsop said Mr Palfreyman suffered two loose teeth and a bleeding mouth and Mr Horbury was left with a sore collar bone.

Police later found Cowlishaw with 0.9grammes of cocaine.

He told police the complainants had been staring at him before he punched them.

Cowlishaw pleaded guilty to the two assaults and to possessing cocaine after the offences on November 13.

Magistrates sentenced Cowlishaw on Thursday, December 3, to eight weeks of custody suspended for 18 months with a Resolve programme and a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He must also pay £85 costs, a £180 courts charge and £150 in compensation.
