Chesterfield heroin addict stole his mum's shopping vouchers

Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Wednesday, January 13, how Luke Anthony Twigg, 22, of North Side, New Tupton, Chesterfield, stole £450 worth of Park Christmas vouchers to help feed his heroin and crack-cocaine addiction.

Prosecuting solicitor Rod Chapman said: “There have been issues as far as Anthony Twigg is concerned regarding his demands for money to purchase drugs.

“In the past, his parents Anthony and Theresa Twigg have suffered thefts at their son’s hand but being his parents they have not reported these to the police.

“They have resorted to locking rooms in the house to prevent him gaining access.”

Mrs Twigg received a text while she was away saying her Christmas shopping vouchers were being despatched to her home, according to Mr Chapman, and her son signed for them and stole and used them to raise money for his drugs.

Twigg pleaded guilty to the theft which happened on October 10, last year.

Defence solicitor John Wilford said: “The defendant is working to defeat the drug habit. He has an addiction to heroin and crack-cocaine.

“He’s on Subutex medication and he’s receiving counselling and is looking to go into rehabilitation in Derby in the near future.”

Magistrates sentenced Twigg on January 14 to a 16 weeks of custody suspended for 12 months with a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also ordered to pay £450 in compensation, an £80 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
