A charity cricket match is to be held later this month in memory of medical student Neil Dalton who was stabbed to death in Borneo.

Neil, 22, from Ambergate, was killed along with Aidan Brunger, from Kent, in Kuching last year, in the final days of his medical placement.

Belper Amateurs Cricket Club will be hosting a cricketing tri-tournament on Sunday August 16, aimed at celebrating the life of the popular player.

Neil’s friend, Oliver Deeming, said: “After the success of Neil’s Day last year, the event has slightly changed in format to accommodate more events, more music and a team of Neil’s university friends from Newcastle.

“The other teams will be Neil’s XI - a team made up of Neil’s junior cricket team and his closest friends from the local area - and a Belper XI with players from Belper Amateurs Cricket Club and Belper United Football Club.”

It will also raise money for Neil’s chosen charity, Anthony Nolan, which supports people battling blood cancer.

Cricket at the Sandyford Lane ground in Alderwasley gets underway at 10.30am, with the final taking place at around 4pm.

A presentation will follow at 6.30pm when Belper Amateurs will unveil a patio area in memory of Neil, and a raffle draw will be held.

There will also be volleyball and beat-the-goalie tournaments taking place throughout the day, with all proceeds going to Anthony Nolan, plus food and drink, sweet and cake stalls.

There will also be plenty of live entertainment, including a local DJ playing during the afternoon and then, at the culmination of the cricket, local acts performing between 7pm and 9pm.
