Buxton’s got talent

A Buxton vicar was so delighted to discover such talented potters, wood turners and embroiderers in his congregation, he organised an exhibition to showcase their wares last weekend.

Reverend Andrew Parker held a talent weekend at Buxton Methodist Church last Friday, Saturday and Sunday where parishioners displayed their homemade handiwork.

With two thirds of his flock revealing hidden talents, the Chapel Street church was a hotbed of skill, as bakers showed off their cakes, painters displayed their artwork and knitters flaunted their woolly designs.

Andrew said: “There was no competition or prizes, it was merely about celebrating everyone’s talents. We had everything from a girl making model aeroplanes to a man carving chains out of matchsticks. We even had children dancing.

“It was lovely because some of the parish have known each other for ten to 20 years and they were saying ‘Oh, I didn’t know so-and-so could paint!’ They’ve all been sitting on their talents.”

He explained that the idea for the event came from attending an art exhibition by church goers in Earl Sterndale.

“We thought, we could have a go at that and it just sort of snowballed from there,” Andrew added. “We were so surprised at how many people came forward. We’ll certainly look at doing it again next year.”
