Michael Milligan was photographed by a security guard removing copper cables and lead from Buxton’s former traction maintenance depot, near Station Road, on October 16.

The 45-year-old was then identified by police.

Milligan, of Fairfield Road, pleaded guilty to the theft of an unknown quantity of the metals at High Peak Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard how the defendant and an unknown accomplice left the scene after being spotted, leaving behind a rucksack containing an angle grinder, a bag of wire and several pieces of lead.

Prosecutor Jennifer Fitzgerald said Milligan was already subject to a community order imposed in November last year for handling stolen goods and going equipped for theft.

John Bunting, defending said: “The offence is a small amount of scrap from a disused building.”

Milligan was due to be sentenced yesterday (Wednesday).
