A busy Chesterfield road is closed this morning as emergency services respond to a house fire in the area.

Newbold Road is currently closed between the mini roundabout at the Co-op and the mini roundabout near Tesco petrol station at Highfield Lane.

Police are urging motorists to find an alternative route and expect delays through Newbold.

The closure is in place due to an ongoing house fire.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary said: “The force was called by the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to reports of a fire at a house in Newbold Road at around 8.55am.

“Fire crews are currently on site and officers are assisting with road closures. Drivers should avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible.”

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Servicfe said: “At 8:52 this morning, 27 September 2021, Firefighters from Chesterfield, Staveley, Dronfield and Nottinghamshire’s Mansfield Fire Station responded to a house fire on Newbold Road, Chesterfield.

“Firefighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to tackle the fire.”

One witness said: “I drove through this just before emergency services arrived. Very bad fire affecting what looked like at least three houses.

"I phoned 999 who was already dispatching crew out. To the man whom kicked down the doors and went inside the houses to check if people was inside unimaginable and what a very brave thing to do.

"It’s really not a nice thing to witness at all and I truly hope everyone is safe and wel.”
