Brave Chesterfield teenager wins prestigious Rotary award

A university student who has raised nearly £140,000 for Sheffield Children's Hospital, where he was treated for a rare disease, has been honoured with a Young Citizen of the Year award by Rotary International Great Britain & Ireland.

After a bone marrow transplant and a full recovery, Andrew, who lived in Old Brampton, decided to give something back and set his fundraising target at £150,000, the cost of a transplant.

Andrew received the prestigious award, along with a cheque for £500 towards his charity, from Rotary district governor Michael Longdon, on behalf of RIBI National Rotary president Denis Spiller, at a meeting of Chesterfield Rotary Club. The ceremony was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Cllr Stuart Brittain and his wife Anne, and Chesterfield Rotary president Peter Barr.

n response, Andrew, who is now 19 and in his first year at Liverpool University, thanked Rotary for their support both locally and nationally. He is planning to raise more funds this summer with a 200-mile sponsored bike ride from Liverpool to Skegness with his elder brother James.
