Thirty people gathered in Spital Cemetery in Chesterfield at 5am this morning for a special Anzac Day commemoration.

Anzac Day is traditionally held on this day to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand armed forces who served in wars and peacekeeping duties.

Ed Fordham, vice chairman of Friends of Spital Cemetery, which organised the service, said: "As we gathered in the darkness it was very special seeing people arriving and walking to the chapels on Hady Hill.

"We were very lucky to have Barry Telfer over from Australia as a bugler and without him this service would not have taken place.

"In addition were were joined by the standard bearer of the local British Legion as well as members of the Western Front Association, former servicemen of the Falklands and more.

"We hope that this might become an annual service not least to remember the young men from Chesterfield who emigrated to Australia at the start of the 19th century and duly fought and in some cases died as Anzacs."

A short service will also be held at the war memorial on Rose Hill opposite Chesterfield town hall at 11am. People should be in place for 10.45am.
