In the wake of the decision, a spokesperson for Aldi said: “We’re delighted with Amber Valley Borough Council’s decision to unanimously approve our application.

“There has been overwhelming support from the local community and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who took the time to make their views known.

“The store represents a multi-million-pound investment in the town that will create up to 40 new jobs, improve local shopping choice and reduce the need for people to travel out of the area to complete their food shopping.

“We look forward to starting work on site and hope to open our doors to the people of Belper soon.”

The spokesperson could not confirm when work on the new store would be starting, but said they are currently drawing up a timetable.

Belper Town Mayor Dan Booth said the approval was very positive for the town.

He said: “The public seem to support this new store. It will improve the look of the site and will also create new jobs.”

He added: “Like a lot of other Belper residents, if you want to go to Aldi you have to go out of town, so having one in town will be great.

“It will also create competition with other supermarkets in town, which can’t be a bad thing.”
