38 homes and four apartments could be built near Chesterfield College
Nearly 40 new homes could be built near Chesterfield College.
Woods and Sons Developments Ltd has submitted a planning application to Chesterfield Borough Council proposing the demolition of existing commercial buildings on land at the former Commerce Centre on Canal Wharf in the town.
The Sheffield-based firm wants to build 38 homes at the location.
It also plans to 'sympathetically' convert Thornfield House, a Georgian building which is located at the site, into four apartments.
The planning application states: "The majority of the development will be accessed using the existing access from Canal Wharf which will lead to a small adoptable road into the site. The road will terminate into private drives.
"The proposed dwellings are predominantly two-storeys in height and of good size to provide future occupiers with adequate living space and amenity. The scale of the house will be in keeping with the character of the area.
"The proposed development, which is in a sustainable location, has been designed to be in keeping with the existing housing in the area
"Thornfield House will remain but will be sympathetically converted to four flats."
Chesterfield Civic Society said it suported the proposed development.
The group said: "It retains the original Thornfield House and provides for a number of new houses and flats on the site, which appear to us to be well-designed and well-laid-out, and fit in well with the adjoining pre-war council houses.
"We are pleased to see more reasonably priced new homes being built within walking distance of the town centre and on a good bus route."
