Forecasters say they may have to up the warning to amber – meaning residents should be prepared to change their plans and protect themselves from the impacts of severe weather.

It would be the area’s first amber ‘be prepared’ snow warning this winter.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Accumulations of three to eight centimetres are likely in places, perhaps ten to 15 centimetres on high ground.

“The snow should ease gradually through Wednesday morning.

“The public is advised to take extra care.”

He added: “It is likely this warning may be upgraded to amber should confidence increase sufficiently.”

Daytime temperatures are struggling to exceed 3C in many towns and villages across the area while overnight temperatures are plunging to lows of –5C.

The East Midlands is currently under a severe cold weather warning issued by the Met Office.
