9. Matlock
Matlock is another good base for a staycation in the Peak District as it has good transport links. Local attractions include the steam trains run by Peak Rail from Matlock to Rowsley, Crich Tramway Village, Matlock Bath Illuminations in September and October, Cromford Mills - the world's first factory system - and the Heights of Abraham, where a ride in a cable car between limestone cliffs affords wonderful views of the Derwent Valley.
