If you’re planning a day trip over the coming weeks, these are some of the best spots to explore across Derbyshire and the Peak District.
These scenic towns and villages are among the most picturesque in the area - and should feature at the top of your list if you find yourself in Derbyshire this autumn.

5. Castleton
Castleton is one of the most popular villages to visit in the Peak District, and it isn't hard to see why. It offers easy access to scenic walking routes and remarkable show caverns - such as Peak Cavern, Blue John Cavern and Speedwell Cavern. If you want to delve into the area’s history, why not head out to Peveril Castle - and you can visit one of the village’s many great pubs, cafes and restaurants afterwards. Photo: jason chadwick

6. Edensor
This custom-built village on the Chatsworth Estate was specially commissioned by the sixth Duke of Devonshire, and incorporates a variety of stunning traditional house designs – including mock Tudor properties and Swiss-style cottages. Edensor also has a connection to former US President John F Kennedy, who made the pilgrimage to Edensor in July 1963 to visit the grave of his sister Kathleen Kennedy (who had married into the Devonshire family). 7. Birchover
This historic Derbyshire village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 - where it was recorded as belonging to Henry de Ferrers and being worth eight shillings. The Rowtor Rocks lie just outside the village of Birchover, where caves, rooms, tunnels, steps and even an armchair have been carved into the stone. Victorian tourists were led to believe these were the work of an ancient Druid community - but were carved by a local man some 300 years ago. Photo: Brian Eyre
