Can I move house or let a tradesperson into my home during the second national lockdown? Everything you need to know about property under new restrictions

When the first lockdown began in March, people were told by the Government to delay property swaps and ‘do all they can’ to agree a new moving date.

The next countrywide shutdown will start on Thursday, and last for four weeks till December 2, in a bid to fight the second wave of coronavirus.

Non-essential shops and hospitality businesses will have to close, and people will only be able to meet one person from outside their household in a public place outdoors.

But unlike the earlier shutdown, schools, colleges and universities will be allowed to stay open.

And Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has confirmed that the housing market will remain open throughout the second lockdown.

On his Twitter page he wrote: “Q: Can I still move house?

“A: Yes – the housing market will remain open throughout this period. Everyone should continue to play their part in reducing the spread of the virus by following the current guidance.”

He also added that renters and homeowners will still be able to move and removal firms and estate agents can continue to operate.

However, he did not elaborate on how estate agents will continue viewings.

Work on new developments is also set to carry on, Mr Jenrick added: “Construction sites can and should continue. Tradespeople will be able to enter homes. But all must follow the Covid safety guidance.”

The Financial Conduct Authority has also said lenders will extend mortgage holidays for up to a maximum of six weeks following the announcement of the second lockdown.
