As we had time off to enjoy a leisurely meal, we decided to sample the award-winning breakfast at Fresh Basil that everyone has been talking about.

On entering the deli, we were greeted by pleasant and friendly staff and a wonderful smell.

We ordered our breakfasts £6.25 each plus a latte coffee and went to the upper level to watch the bustle of a small busy shop.

We were able to look down at the deli counter with its cooked meats and cheeses, freshly baked bread which we had previously sampled many times at Belper food festivals. jars of sauces, meringues and Fresh Basil’s own label bottled beers as well as the wicker baskets hanging from the walls which were for sale.

The food and drinks arrived in good time and we were not disappointed.

The breakfast comprised of dry cured bacon, large meaty sausage, mushrooms, black pudding, egg, tomatoes, beans and door stopper sized pieces of toast.

A condiment tray contained brown and red sauce plus many others to suit all tastes.

Not only did our breakfast look and taste fantastic but the selection of ingredients on our plates complemented each other without there being any competition for taste.

We now know the reason why Fresh Basil have won the award for the best breakfast in Derbyshire for two years. It’s a treat that someone has gone to so much trouble to give such a wonderful experience just from the humble fry-up.

The hearty breakfast which kept us feeling full for much of the day made us wish that we had not parked the car so far away!

If you haven’t got time to sit and enjoy a meal, the eatery does a lovely breakfast cob to take away.

Fresh Basil has many other tempting dishes on their menu from simple porridge with fruit, a black pudding salad, bacon or prawn Caesar, blue cheese salad, smoked salmon salad or bread and olives, a good tapas and sandwich selection plus many more to choose from.

This is not a greasy spooncafe but a continental cafe, welcoming you whether you are in a hurry or have all the time in the world to sit and enjoy a leisurely meal with friends or family.

There are also a few tables outside for that sunny, warm day.

Fresh Basil is a deli and eatery which gives a warm and friendly welcome to everyone who pops in, either to eat, drink or buy the bread, which is baked on the premises.
