Derbyshire Times reporter Alana Roberts is among 70 percent of the nation’s dog owners who make a fuss of their pet on their special day.

Her Romanian rescue dog Brownie lapped up the attention on his day of celebration.

Alana said: “We wanted to make it a little special as we'd only had him a couple of months and it was his first birthday in his first actual home.

"We baked some dog friendly cake, took him a walk to a field nearby which he absolutely loves, and gave him a couple new toys which he happily played with in the

garden (and we made him his own Instagram).”

Research shows that nearly a quarter (22 percent) of dog owners say that their pet’s birthdays was one of their favourite days of the year.

More than half (54 percent) of the nation’s canine companions will receive new toys for their birthday.
