Chesterfield Theatre Company present murder-mystery comedy

They will appear in Rob Urbaniti’s Death by Design – an art nouveau-style murder mystery-cum-comedy – at the town’s Rose Theatre from April 14 to 16.

It was almost 50 years ago that they played in Tapton School’s production of T S Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral. Sue is a well-established member of the company, both acting and directing. Rob is a newcomer and this will be his first part since acting at school.

The play is billed as ‘Noel Coward meets Agatha Christie’ and features Sue as Sorrell Bennett, a highly-strung actress who thrives on the adoration of her admirers. Her husband Edward - a playwright who puts up with her flirtations – is played by Simon Gordon.

Rob plays the part of Jack the chauffeur who seems to be an unlikely magnet to the opposite sex.

Alongside him is another newcomer Nigel Timperley as typical arrogant self-opinionated politician Walter Pearce, who has an assignation with Sorrell. Harry Goring is Eric, an off-the-wall interloper who also fancies his chances with Sorrell.

Heather Beresford plays long-suffering housekeeper Bridget, the only one who really knows what is going on. And Ruth Higginbottom plays the outrageous Victoria Van Roth, a mad Isadora Duncan-style dancer. Jemma Monkhouse is the hapless Alice and Joanne Gordon the daffy maid. The director is David Holmes.
