Shops were on the corner of many residential streets and in one area of Chesterfield large families were living in insanitary houses that were later demolished to make way for new roads.

10. 1985
This building's roots lie in the 16th century when it was constructed as a guildhall. By the late 1600s it had been divided into two houses,one which was occupied by the mayor of Chesterfield and the other by a merchant. In 1829 the Sign of the Peacock public house opened in the building and Brampton Brewery took over ownership of the property 51 years later.
