PCSO Fraser Bullas, 58, says the professional skill of Dr Aneesah Shaukat, of the Glumangate Dental Practice in Chesterfield, makes her a true ‘unsung hero’.

Although he still faces a long period of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment, Fraser is thankful that the quick actions of his dentist have given him a great chance of a full recovery.

Fraser, who is based at Woodseats police station, said: “There is a 95 per cent chance I will make a full recovery and return back to my beat with South Yorkshire police. I have a long road ahead of me but I will beat this.

“My recovery looks very good but if it hadn't been for my dentist’s quick actions it might have been a different outcome.”

Dr Shaukat said she wished Fraser a full and speedy recovery, and urged other people to not put off trips to their dentist.

She said: “During a routine check-up, along with checking the teeth and gums, dentists also carry out a routine oral cancer screening. We check for unexplained ulcers, abnormal red or white areas and also for any unexplained lumps in the neck.

“The key with head and neck cancer is to spot it early, hence why regular visits to the dentist are so important – even if you don't think anything is wrong.

“I am so glad I was able to help and I hope the surgery went well. I wish Mr Bullas a quick and full recovery.”

Fraser, who has been married to wife Dawne for seven years, was having a check-up in February when Dr Shaukat spotted the lump on his neck, just beneath the jaw.

On March 19, Fraser was diagnosed with cancer and began undergoing scans and exploratory surgery at hospital.

“I would like to add a big mention to the nurses and doctors at Chesterfield Royal Hospital who have worked tirelessly throughout the virus crisis and expedited my case,” he added.

Fraser has been a PSCO at Woodseats for 11 years and before that served for four years as a special constable.
