Mumps outbreak at major school near Chesterfield

A school near Chesterfield has confirmed a ‘small number of pupils’ are suspected of having mumps.

Leaders at Tupton Hall School issued a brief statement on their website this morning to confirm they had contacted health chiefs about the outbreak.

“There are currently a small number of students absent from school suspected of having mumps,” the stement says.

“The school has taken advice from the Health Protection Agency and advise, if you suspect that your child may have mumps, to follow the NHS Guidance found on its website and to contact your GP for a firm diagnosis.”

Health officials are urging people to have both parts of the MMR vaccine after cases of mumps in England reached their highest level in a decade.

Public Health England said the full two doses of the vaccination were needed.
