At 2.30pm on Monday, staff at the Royal were looking after 69 people with the virus – 12 of whom required intensive care.

She added: “At the height of the pandemic earlier this year we had 82 patients with coronavirus including 17 ITU patients for a short period of time.

“While these numbers are concerning, please remember that we have well practiced escalation plans and we’re reviewing these every single day to respond effectively to the current situation.

“Remember we’re still looking after hundreds of other patients who have different urgent medical and surgical needs – as well as new mums, babies and children who also need our care.

"Yes it’s busy and pressurised – but our staff are working incredibly hard to make sure you are safely cared for in any circumstances, whether it’s Covid or something equally serious.

“We’d also like to give every single one of our colleagues a massive shout out and thank all of our clinical and support services for everything they do every day.”

Some 600 people who were admitted to the hospital with the virus have been able to return home since the end of March.

On Monday, preliminary analysis showed that the first effective coronavirus vaccine can prevent more than 90 per cent of people from getting Covid-19.

The developers – Pfizer and BioNTech – described it as a ‘great day for science and humanity’.
