However, Chesterfield Royal Hospital spokesperson Sarah Turner-Saint said the trust had recorded 143 deaths since the end of March.

She explained: “The 143 figure includes seven deaths where the patient never tested positive for Covid-19 but was being treated for it because of other clinical indicators, such as a confirmation of the virus on a lung x-ray.

“National figures report deaths from Covid-19 where a patient had a positive swab test result.”

Over the weekend, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire entered Tier 2 lockdown measures.

Ms Turner-Saint said: “We know that some hospitals nearby have suspended visiting to reduce footfall on their sites because of high numbers of Covid-19 cases and because they are a Tier 2 alert area.

“When we restarted visiting in August, we opted to do so through a designated visitor system, which enables each patient to have a visitor for one hour a day.

“As this has proved successful, we are not suspending visiting at this stage, recognising that this is incredibly upsetting for both the patient and their loved-ones.

“We are grateful for the support people have shown to this designated system, which includes using the one hour slot the bed is given, wearing a face covering, hand-washing and maintaining social distancing at all times.

“Now that we are also in a Tier 2 area these measures are even more important and there’s more information about designated visiting on our website.”
