People across the country were moved by a video of York nurse Dawn Bilbrough and her despair at the empty supermarket shelves she was confronted with after a 48-hour shift tackling coronavirus.

The Royal posted on Facebook today that one resident had brought in a selection of groceries for teams at the hospital.

“We've all seen some of the disappointing pictures of our supermarket shelves but it's heartening to see that, out of that situation has come some astonishing acts of kindness,” the hospital said.

“One individual saw those pictures and heard about some hard-working NHS colleagues across the UK who have been struggling to get the food they need due to their shifts.

“She went to Tesco and bought a few supplies, bringing them into our Intensive Therapy Unit matron to share amongst the staff who need them.

“It's a truly lovely and heart-warming moment of generosity, thoughtfulness and selflessness that has raised the spirits and brought a smile to many faces.

“Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support and donated supplies...our colleagues are so grateful and it means more than you know.”

The hospital confirmed on Wednesday that it is treating patients who have tested positive for coronavirus.

It has also reduced visiting times for people to avoid the spread of the virus.
