Angie Smithson, the Royal’s chief executive, said attentions were now turning to restoring ‘much-needed services’.

In a statement issued on the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday, she said: “On a day when we have spent time remembering those who have lost their lives in conflict, our thoughts are also with families across the country who have lost loved ones during the pandemic.

“While we remain in a level four national incident, we have entered the second phase in our response to Covid-19.

“Over the next few weeks we will be working as a health and social care system to restore much-needed services, with all partners across Derbyshire collaborating to make sure we provide our patients and communities with the best possible care in safe and accessible ways.

“The welfare of our staff is also a key priority.
