The driver was stopped by officers in Lincoln, who spotted it was registered miles away in Chesterfield despite people being ordered to stay at home to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Sergeant Mike Templeton said: “Driver stated he was having a road trip to football grounds around the country having left Chesterfield yesterday. You simply couldn’t make it up!

"Covid-19 penalty ticket issued along with the strongest words of advice!”

There are 92 league football grounds in the UK, with people who have visited every club’s home stadium earning membership of the ‘92 Club’.

It’s not clear whether the driver in question was planning to visit them all during the third national lockdown in which people have been asked to travel only for essential reasons.

Responding to Sergeant Templeton’s tweet, one person wrote: “That’s crazy. It’s people like this who are the reason why the Covid situation is so bad in this country. Not only that but they then put you guys at additional risk having to deal with them stay safe out there.”

Another commented: “Hope he got a red card and sent for an early shower.”

And a third said: “Honestly, we will soon be on tier 7, 8, 9 and 10 if people like this carry on. Jeez.”

Asked whether police had apprehended any ‘real criminals’, Sergeant Templeton replied: “Plenty. We arrested three in the early hours of this morning on pro-active patrols as we didn’t have to deal with any selfish individuals breaching lockdown.”
