Coronavirus: Advice for Derbyshire parents considering keeping children off school

Derbyshire headteachers will decide on ‘a case-by-case basis’ if school absences during the coronavirus are justified.

The Government is currently advising that schools remain open – but they have been closed in several other European countries.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesperson said: "It is the responsibility of headteachers to consider and determine on a case-by-case basis whether a child's absence is authorised or unauthorised and then to decide whether to ask the county council to issue a penalty notice on the school's behalf.

"We can reassure parents that as the local authority we’re actively reviewing Government advice around school-related coronavirus issues on a daily basis and that currently the advice is for schools to remain open.

"Meanwhile, we're providing schools with support and advice about the measures needed to minimise risks from the virus which as in line with the messages being publicised by Public Health England and the NHS."
