Chesterfield's 'Beat the Streets' game sees participants clock more than 82,000 miles

Participants in the Beat the Street game in Chesterfield have racked up more than 82,000 miles since the competition began in February.

The game encourages players of all ages to get active and to ditch the car, and walk, cycle or run instead.

More than 12,790 people have signed up for the game, which continues until Wednesday, April 8.

Currently, Brockwell Junior School leads the schools’ total points leader board and Whitecotes tops the average points leaderboard. Rother Community Group is at the top of the community and workplaces total points leaderboard with Velotastic at the top of the average points leaderboard.

On the charity board, Fairplay is at the top of the total points leaderboard with Community Transformation for Cosy Hub at the top of the average points leaderboard.

This week is ‘Go Travel’ week, where organisers encourage participants to think about walking to work or school and walking at lunchtime if possible. There are bonus points on offer around commuting hours.

Speaking about the reaction to Beat the Street Chesterfield, councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “It’s amazing to see so many people out walking and cycling together as part of Beat the Street.

“The ‘Go Travel’ themed week is a good way of seeing if people can get to school or work on foot or by bike.

“It’s often faster than you think to ditch the car and try a different method of getting around the town.”

Beat the Street is being delivered by Intelligent Health in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council and is funded by a National Lottery grant through Sport England and Chesterfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership.
