Children at Barlborough Primary School have been busy creating a new artwork for The Big Barlborough Festival to celebrate the village’s rich history.

Arts charity, Junction Arts, commissioned textile artist, Grace Jandrell to create a large-scale festival banner with the help of people from the local community. She visited Barlborough Primary School to show students from year three the cyanotype printing method. The children created their own designs inspired by what Barlborough means to them and the images were then printed onto small textile panels which will be included in the final banner design.

A weekend workshop is also being held at Barlborough Village Hall, where members of the community are invited to make more panels for the artwork.

The banner will be displayed at The Big Barlborough Festival (12-14 July) and future events in the village.

Jane Wells, Project Manager at Junction Arts said: “We were approached by Barlborough Parish Council to make something for their festival. We wanted to support the event by developing a Barlborough Banner which tells the story of the village from history to the present day. The new artwork will be revealed at The Big Barlborough Festival this summer, but it will also be on display at future village events and it will be enjoyed for many years to come.

“Grace Jandrell is a brilliant artist who is experienced working with communities to make great artworks – we knew she was the right person for the job. The children had a great time and made some wonderful designs, we can’t wait to see the finished banner on display, which will be a proud moment for the whole village.”

The Big Barlborough Festival is a collaboration between Barlborough Parish Council, Heritage Centre, the National Garden Scheme and local churches. The weekend will have a variety of events for all ages including a stand-up comedy night in the church on Friday night, a flower festival, an exhibition at the Heritage Centre, an Art Exhibition at the Methodist church, the NGS Open Gardens to visit and legendary tea and cake to purchase in aid of charity, Brass on the Grass on the Saturday night, a fun run on the Sunday in addition to a fun afternoon for young people on the Village Green.
