Grassroots heart brings communities to life again around Chesterfield

Across North East Derbyshire, two women are redefining what it means to build community from the ground up.
Growth Activities CIC, co-founders Natalie Peace and Donna Booth have created a movement rooted in nature, wellbeing and belonging. From holistic health sessions and outdoor education to school projects and social prescribing referrals, their work is driven by one simple principle: listen first, act second.
“We spend time really listening to what people want,” says Natalie. “The community tells us what’s missing, we just help make it happen.”
At their gatherings, food is often at the centre, not just to nourish, but to bring people together. Their events create safe, welcoming spaces where anyone can turn up, whether they’re seeking support or simply connection. “It’s about the personal touch,” adds Donna. “People know we’ll be there for them, not just send an email.”
One lady referred to Growth Activities six years ago had been agoraphobic for over a decade. Through gentle encouragement and shared purpose, she built confidence, retrained and is now a qualified counsellor helping others. Showing the individual and community worth that building people up can have
This grassroots approach, built on trust, love and genuine relationships, is what Natalie and Donna believe keeps communities well. “Small groups like ours level out inequality,” they explain. “There’s no hierarchy, everyone’s equal and heard. That makes honesty and healing possible.”
They also work hand-in-hand with local partners, from Derbyshire Voluntary Action to NHS social prescribers, to create a more joined-up approach. “We bring the heart, DVA brings the clout,” says Natalie. “Together we can make things happen.”
But sustaining that work is tough. “We’re project-funded, there’s nothing for the extra hours, networking or mentoring that keeps it all going,” Donna explains. “We need long-term trust and investment, and spaces we can truly call our own.”
For Growth Activities, their dream is simple: land to build a permanent community base where hope, wellbeing and purpose can continue to grow.
Because when local people lead local change, everyone benefits.
