McDonald’s reveals when its third restaurant will open in Chesterfield

The restaurant will open at the site of the former multi-storey car park on West Bars in the summer.

Sixty-five jobs will be created and it will be McDonald’s third outlet in the town.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We are really excited that work has started on a brand new McDonald’s restaurant in Chesterfield and will open in the summer.”

Commenting on our Facebook page, Di Baxter said: “What a total waste of money and land.

“Can’t we get something useful, something we haven’t already got enough of.”

Ben Hague said: “For the people saying something more useful should be being built there, McDonald’s bought the land when no other company did.

“The space has been unused for years so I’m glad to see something being built that will create jobs.”

Diane Reilly commented: “Why would anyone put a McDonald’s on a roundabout – it’s ridiculous.”

Amii Louise said: “That area is already bad for traffic.”

Diane Raybould added that ‘more rubbish will be dumped’.

The Derbyshire Times asked the McDonald’s spokesperson if they wanted to address people’s concerns about litter and traffic issues.

They responded: “We’re looking forward to seeing our customers, new and old, enjoy our services.”

In a statement submitted to Chesterfield Borough Council when McDonald’s submitted its planning application for the development, the company said: “McDonald’s is committed to tackling litter in as many different ways as possible.

“It is company policy to conduct a minimum of three daily litter patrols, whereby employees pick up not only McDonald’s packaging but also any other litter that may have been discarded in a 100m vicinity of a restaurant.”

A planning officer’s report which was considered by councillors last year also said ‘there is no data … that the development would result in severe harm on the highway network’.

There are currently two McDonald’s restaurants in Chesterfield – on Low Pavement and at the Alma Leisure Park.

Last year, the McDonald’s spokesperson said the firm does not plan on closing them when the new restaurant opens.

The site of the new development has lain derelict since 2015 when the old multi-storey car park was knocked down.
