When asked whether Sheffield's store in Barker’s Pool would be extending its hours, a John Lewis spokeswoman said: “Opening hours will be decided on a local level and will be dependent on demand, so we are advising customers to check their local shop's opening times online before visiting.”

The store’s page on the John Lewis website lists hours of 9am to 6pm from Wednesday to Friday, December 2 to 4, then 9am to 7pm on Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.

Customers will be able to visit www.johnlewis.com and pre-book a time to visit their local store up to a fortnight in advance.

A click and collect service will still be available. Customers can collect orders from 16 department store car parks and 15 car parks at Waitrose supermarkets, which are also part of the John Lewis Partnership.

Most John Lewis stores will be open from 9am to 5pm on Christmas Eve. They will be closed on Boxing Day – with the exception of the Trafford Centre branch – and New Year’s Day.

The Government is giving shops in England permission to stay open for 24 hours before Christmas and in January.
