Ibbotsons fruit and veg stall has been a fixture on the market since 1945 and is still trading to keep larders stocked with healthy produce during the national crisis.
From an eerily quiet Market Place, the Ibbotsons team is adjusting to the ‘new normal’ we have been told to expect at businesses across the country, with social distancing measures in place and one customer served at a time.

“We have had a lot of lovely feedback and comments of gratitude that we are still working and providing such high quality, fresh produce,” Nick said.
“We would like to say thank you to all our customers both old and new who continue to support us through these difficult times. We feel honoured to be able to continue to trade and help feed the people of Chesterfield.”
Nick says there is currently ‘no chance’ of picking up passing trade as people only venture out for essential shopping.

“We have reduced hours as the footfall in the town centre dramatically decreases in the afternoon. Everyone seems to come out in the morning. We have slightly reduced the items offered, selling a little less exotic produce as we do not have the passing trade.
“In the main, the supply has been consistent but we have experienced a few shortages due to where products are being imported from. When we are able to source UK-grown produce we are buying these – as we always have done.”
With such a limited number of traders continuing to open, Nick says the feeling is of a ‘small community’ doing its bit to keep the town running.
