Government figures reveal how many people have been furloughed in Derbyshire

More than 157,000 people in Derbyshire have had their jobs safeguarded by the Treasury’s bailout of the economy, official figures show.

According to HMRC, businesses furloughed 28,500 jobs in Derby city and 96,100 jobs in Derbyshire county up to May 31.

The Job Retention Scheme has seen the Government pay 80 per cent of the wages of workers forced to stay at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

Meanwhile, paid grants have been given to self-employed workers through the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme for the same reason.

Those grants totalled £17.1million in Derby and £73.3m in Derbyshire up to May 31, supporting 32,800 people in total.

Combined, the Government says it has supported the wages of 157,400 jobs in Derby and Derbyshire so far.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “The UK Government is doing everything we can to protect jobs and businesses in Derbyshire and across the UK during the crisis.”
