Chesterfield company gains global attention for its 'Crooked Pickle' at Great Taste awards
A Chesterfield company has been named as a star of 2020 for its ‘fantastic’ and tasty pickles in an international good food competition.
The Crooked Pickle Co beat competition from 12,777 products sent in from 106 different countries to gain top prizes in Great Taste, labelled the ‘world’s most trusted food and drink awards’.
The business, based on Cobden Road, was awarded a one-star Great Taste award, which means judges labelled it a food ‘that delivers fantastic flavour’, for its Korean Pickled Garlic and a two-star award, meaning judges dubbed it ‘above and beyond delicious’, for its Bread and Butter Pickles.
Felix Mendelsohn, founder and owner of The Crooked Pickle Co, said: “Having a keen interest in all things food since as long as I can remember, being awarded for both my Bread and Butter Pickles and the Korean Pickled Garlic is pretty awesome.
"I just wanted to share my love of these wonderful pickles and now I’m an award winner. Time to order new labels complete with our new awards logo.
"I’ll be celebrating with my wonderful family, enjoying a few ice cold beers and maybe some home made burgers topped of course with our now famous pickles.”
The Crooked Pickle Co was established in 2018 after Felix realised that there was a gap in the UK market for ‘inventive and tasty pickled vegetables’.
The name was chosen because the pickles were created close to Chesterfield’s famous Crooked Spire church and because many of the vegetables used are ‘not always cut straight’.
Judged by 144 food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers and producers, as well as food writers and journalists, Great Taste is regarded as the most coveted of all food and drink awards.
As well as a badge of honour, the black and gold Great Taste label is regarded as a signpost to an outstanding product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting.
Awards organisers say it’s ‘not about smart packaging or clever marketing – it’s all about taste’.
This year’s winners were found through a combination of remote judging and socially distanced judging sessions after the Covid-19 lockdown began just one week into the normal awards schedule.
