Chesterfield child services provider on shortlist for Investors in People employer of the year award

A Chesterfield children’s services provider has been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of its outstanding employment practices.

Five Rivers Child Care, based at the Market Hall, is one of 12 contenders for the employer of the year gold category at the Investors in People Awards 2020.

The social enterprise works with more than 135 local authorities and NHS trusts to deliver services including foster care, residential homes, therapy, and alternative education provision.

Chief executive Pam McConnell said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been selected as finalists.

Established in 1989, Five Rivers has established itself as an innovator in the field.

It has set up representative groups across the country and a national youth council to ensure young people’s voices are heard in decision-making processes.

It also reinvests more than half of all profits back into the business to ensure those in its care derive the benefits.

Shortlist selectors were particularly keen to recognise Fiver Rivers’ work during the COVID-19 crisis, noting how the strong foundations of its professional culture allowed it to maintain services.

There was also praise for the investment in leadership and employee rewards which have helped it retain staff.

Pam said: “With this year posing many challenges, it’s a particular honour to be recognised for how we have protected our employees. Our people are our biggest asset.

"They are the ones on the front line, helping to turn children’s lives around and they personified our values throughout pandemic.”

She added: “They have shown tenacious commitment to the task, flexibility, support, and excellence while continuing to work through this challenging period.”

Investors in People is the UK’s leading accreditation for business improvement through people management. Award winners will be announced in an online ceremony on November 24.
