Chesterfield beauty salon owner reopens business to help women struggling with anxiety
A Chesterfield woman hopes to help other women dealing with anxiety after reopening her home-based beauty salon.
Sarah Beighton has welcomed back customers to her nail and beauty bar Sarah Louise Hair and Nails, based in her garage in Grassmoor.
The 36-year-old mother of two, who has suffered with severe anxiety and depression for over 10 years, swapped her previous career as a health and safety officer to become a qualified nail technician, beautician and massage therapist.
Sarah hopes her personal, one-to-one service will help other women share their worries when receiving treatments.
She added: "When I was working in a busy salon the anxiety was a lot worse, it's lots of different people, it is very busy.
"My aim really is to help women that are like me, that suffer with depression, severe anxiety, low confidence because ladies like that and myself find it more difficult to go into more busy, commercial salons.
"I'm trying to give them the opportunity to have that little bit of 'me time' with somebody that understands what they are going through.”
She explained how the flexibility of being her own boss has helped her to juggle family life.
"But I first starting struggling because I was a single parent, I was 19 when I fell pregnant.
"I was having to do everything on my own, it was very stressful.”
Sarah was then diagnosed with IBS which caused her to develop emetophobia – a fear of vomiting – along with a food phobia which led her to being underweight.
But the business owner started Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) over Zoom last year, which she said has helped her to get her anxiety more under control.
She added: "One lady said it was my empathy and my understanding that made her want to book with me.
"It's nice to have someone that understands you.
"When you have anxiety, especially if it's severe you never feel normal and you feel like with everything you do, there's something wrong with you.
"It just makes you feel better, having that little bit of time where you come away with beautiful nails or you have a massage and all the tension that you felt goes away.”
