Champion: "What started as a hobby has grown into a business supplying retailers across the UK"

Champion of the Week and Founder of Hogg Norton, Mike Norton, shares how he turned a small hobby into an award-winning business producing handcrafted, small-batch fruit liqueurs in the Peak District.
At Hogg Norton, we handcraft award-winning, small-batch fruit liqueurs in the Peak District, using natural ingredients and locally sourced fruit wherever possible. What started as a hobby has grown into a business supplying independent retailers, farm shops, hospitality venues and corporate gifting companies across the UK. Our range includes flavours such as Spiced Plum, Strawberry, Raspberry, Sloe, Passion Fruit, Limoncello, Seville Orange, and Coffee, among others, all focused on quality and flavour.
What is your organisation looking forward to?
As a business, we’re really looking forward to expanding both our product range and the experiences we offer. In 2026, we’re continuing to develop new seasonal and limited-edition flavours, alongside gift sets and bespoke products for corporate and hospitality partners. We’re also growing our guided tasting experiences, giving people the opportunity to engage directly with our story and products, and they’ve become an enjoyable way to connect with customers and showcase what we do. As consumer demand continues to shift towards premium, craft and locally produced drinks, this is a great opportunity for sustainable growth.
What makes Chesterfield and North Derbyshire a good place to work?
Chesterfield and North Derbyshire are fantastic places to work and run a business. There is a strong sense of community, a supportive business network, and a real pride in local produce and independent companies. The area offers a balance of town and countryside, making it an attractive place for customers and staff. Being based here means we’re surrounded by brilliant local suppliers.
What sparked your decision to invest in Chesterfield or North Derbyshire and why?
Both personal and practical reasons. The Peak District has a strong identity and reputation that aligns with our brand. There’s also a growing appetite for local, craft and premium products, and being based here keeps us connected to our roots, suppliers and customers.
Who has provided advice or mentoring and how has it helped your organisation?
Like many small businesses, advice and mentoring have been vital to our growth. Support from local business networks, fellow entrepreneurs and organisations such as Destination Chesterfield has helped us better understand funding, marketing, partnerships and long-term planning. Access to experienced voices has made a real difference to our confidence and decision-making.
How are you supporting young people?
We engage with universities such as Nottingham's internship program. Young people bring fresh ideas, digital skills and a different perspective, which is hugely valuable for a growing brand like ours. They contribute to everything from marketing and events to production support.
How are you supporting our communities and improving our quality of life?
Community is very important to us. We support local events, collaborate with other Derbyshire producers, and work with charities and community groups through donations and fundraising where we can. By keeping our supply chain local and working with nearby businesses.
How would you describe Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, using only three words?
Welcoming, independent, and proud.
What experiences would you recommend sharing in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, and why?
I would recommend exploring the Peak District from walking and cycling routes to historic sites like Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall. Chesterfield’s famous Crooked Spire is a must-see, and the town centre offers a great mix of independent shops, markets and places to eat and drink.
What places would you recommend to someone planning a two-night stay?
Stay in Chesterfield or the surrounding Peak District villages. This gives easy access to countryside adventures during the day, followed by great food, pubs and local hospitality in the evening. It’s the perfect way to experience the best of what North Derbyshire has to offer.
