Champion: "Small, consistent actions like these help reinforce the sense of community that makes it such a good place to live and work"
Champion of the Week, Matt Jones of Matt Jones Photography, talks through experiencing, capturing, and sharing Chesterfield's story.
My name is Matthew Jones, and I run a commercial photography business rooted in visual storytelling. I work with organisations to help them communicate who they are and what they stand for - through strong, authentic imagery.
What makes Chesterfield and North Derbyshire a good place to work?
Much of my work focuses on people, places and experiences, so being based in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire feels like a natural fit. I work with several national brands, including ALDI, JTL training, Network Plus and London-based marketing agencies, and this takes me all over the country, but Chesterfield feels like my natural home!

There is a strong sense of community, great accessibility to major cities, and an environment that encourages relationships rather than transactions. People are approachable, supportive and genuinely proud of the area. Once you get to know Chesterfield, it becomes a compelling reason for businesses to invest here.
Who has provided advice or mentoring and how has it helped your organisation?
Support and advice from local businesses and networks such as Destination Chesterfield, has been invaluable.
How are you supporting our communities and improving our quality of life?

I believe organisations have a responsibility to contribute to the places they’re part of. For me, that means supporting local initiatives, collaborating with other businesses, and using my work to positively showcase the people and places that make Chesterfield and North Derbyshire special. Small, consistent actions like these help strengthen the area and reinforce the sense of community that makes it such a good place to live and work.
This approach naturally aligns with my role as a Chesterfield Champion. Being a Champion is about advocating for our town - highlighting its strengths, sharing positive stories and encouraging others to see the potential that exists here. Through the work I produce and the networks I’m part of, I aim to promote the area in an authentic, meaningful way.
How would you describe Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, using only three words?
Welcoming, grounded and authentic.
What experiences would you recommend sharing in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, and why?
From the historic market and heritage landmarks to the surrounding countryside, the area offers diverse experiences that feel genuine, grounded in history, nature and people. I’m a keen fell runner, walker and wild swimmer, and I love good food and a strong sense of place - and Chesterfield and the surrounding area tick all those boxes.
What places would you recommend to someone planning a two-night stay?
I’d recommend exploring both the town and the Peak District on our doorstep - enjoying local independent cafes, restaurants and bars, taking in a show and visiting the historical sites.
What is your vision for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire in 2030?
My vision for 2030 is for Chesterfield and North Derbyshire to continue building on their identity - investing in young people, developing skills and strengthening the area’s reputation as one of the best places to live in the country. Continuing to support independent businesses, embrace innovation and technology, and protect our character and heritage will be key to that success.
The next few years are likely to be volatile, from a technological, governmental and geopolitical perspective. So, resilience and adaptivity will be vital. Our strong foundations and open mindsets will help the area navigate what comes next. I’m a firm believer that place matters - not just where you work, but how it shapes the way you do business and connect with people.
