Steampunk Solstice hits Matlock Bath Pavilion

Around 250 steampunks from Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire will gather at the Pavilion on Saturday, June 28, for a celebration of fashion, music and art.

Andie Brazewell, event manager at the Pavilion, said: “Matlock Bath is the ideal place for steampunks as it is built around the Victorian era. They turn up in Victorian costumes which are really glamorous, wander up and down the promenade and love drinking tea.

“They don’t want a swanky new theatre - they love the Pavilion.”

This will be the third summer solstice that the steampunks have held at the Pavilion, which is currently being restored to its former glory. The resort also hosts a Steampunk Illuminata in October to coincide with Matlock Bath illuminations.

The trend is based on science fiction and is inspired by Jules Verne concept of time travel. Andie said: “Steampunk is about music and fashion. The majority of steampunks have had children who are grown up and now they want to do something else.”

Admission to the Steampunk Solstice is £5 and the event runs from 10am to 6pm.
