REVIEW: Arctic Monkeys storm Leeds Festival

It might not have been the safest thing to do but Alex Turner just couldn’t resist singing the praises of ‘wonderful Sheffield’ – in front of a capacity crowd in Leeds.

“Oh Sheffield is wonderful, oh Sheffield is wonderful,” he sung over the intro to Old Yellow Bricks, which he dedicated to the band’s hometown.

It was a move by the Owls fan that drew boos from a certain football section of the crowd as the headliners closed this year’s Leeds Festival.

But it was one that was quickly forgiven by the biggest gathering of this year’s three-day event as lead singer Turner made it clear this was a celebration of their home county.

Wearing a white Yorkshire rose on each lapel of his suit, adapted specially for the occasion, he shouted ‘Yorkshire!’ to a roar of approval, adding: “We’ll have a right laugh with you.”

The thudding drum beat of Do I Wanna Know brought them on stage and the crowd went wild. A red flare lit up the moshpit and the stage also burned brightly for Brianstorm, with snake-hipped Turner, guitarist Jamie Cook, drummer Matt Helders and bassist Nick O’Malley deservedly basking in the glory.

Hit after hit followed, a mix of earlier tunes, including Dancing Shoes, When The Sun Goes Down, Mardy Bum and I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.

But latest album lovers were well catered for with Arabella, Knee Socks, Snap Out Of It, Number One Party Anthem, Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?, One For The Road and finale, R U Mine?

Yes, Alex, Sheffield...Leeds... the rest of the world. We are all yours.
