Chesterfield Operatics' men bare their bodies and souls

Hot on the heels of the televised celebrity performances of The Full Monty at Sheffield City Hall to raise awareness for men's and women's cancer, Chesterfield Operatic Society is performing the musical at the Pomegranate, Chesterfield, later this month.

Already months in rehearsal, the Chesterfield version is based on an Americanised musical stage version adapted from the 1997 British film of the same name in which six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers, low on both cash and prospects, decide to perform a strip act at a club after seeing their wives’ enthusiasm for a touring company of Chippendales.

One of them, Jerry, declares that their show will be better than the Chippendales dancers because they’ll go “the full monty” — strip all the way. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie.

The part of Jerry is being taken by Andy Quinn, who played Judas in the society’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2016 and achieved national fame by appearing as the unexpected star in Michael McIntyre’s televised Big Show.

“This is another exciting project for COS,” said society chair Sarah Morrell. “People said we were mad attempting this show but we’re looking forward to proving them wrong.

“It’s always a challenge to secure men for amateur theatre but we have certainly secured some fabulous men in both the lead roles and the ensemble. This will be a show to remember for all the right reasons “

The show is being directed by Karl Brennan, who will also play the part of Dave, musical director is Jonathan Francis and choreographer Sue Higgins.
