Vibrant buzz about town’s Italian venue

So far our reviews have not seen us venture far from the Chesterfield area, so this time we decided to get our passports and journey to nearby Matlock to sample the fare on offer.

Several restaurants are available but we opted for Viva on Dale Road an Italian restaurant and brasserie.

On arrival we found the restaurant had a vibrant atmosphere.

We were greeted by a friendly waitress who seated us in a very pleasant window seat and left us to peruse the menu, which offered Italian favourites, pizza, pasta calzone and an extensive meat and fish menu.

To start we chose to share the Three Colour Garlic Bread (£3.90), a good sized pizza base with a topping of red onion, feta cheese and fresh basil, which was more than enough for two people. We found the garlic bread base rather dry and flaky and would have preferred it to be a little softer.

For mains I chose the Escalope(£18.95), from the beef section, a prime fillet steak stuffed with red pepper and gorganzola blue cheese. This was a superb piece of steak cooked to perfection with that ‘melt in the mouth’ experience being perfectly compleimented by the pepper and cheese, topped off with a delicious creamy Dijon sauce and served with side salad and and choice of rice, potato wedges or chips.

My partner enjoyed her Vegetariano (£8.65) a dish comprising of peppers, olives, mushroom and red onion fried in garlic butter again offering a pasta of your choice.

The restaurant serves a good selection of desserts including Tiramisu, profiteroles and sweet pancakes plus an extensive selection of Italian ice cream. We found the starter and mains to be quite filling so we decided to skip the desserts and rounded the evening off perfectly with a liqueur coffee from the beverages available, tia maria being our choice.

The service at Viva was good and we enjoyed the food, although we just felt it lacked the ‘wow’ factor.
