Serving up coffee with a sprinkle of culture

Members of the world-famous Halle Orchestra will perform in a series of Sunday morning chamber ‘coffee’ concerts at Spring Bank Arts in New Mills.

The next will take place on Sunday April 21 and feature string trios by violinist Paul Barritt, a permanent guest leader of the Halle, with Cath Yates on viola and cellist Dale Culliford.

They will present a varied programme of music by Bach, arranged by Mozart; Schubert, Kodaly and Beethoven.

Organisers will serve-up coffee and cake at 11am, followed by the concert at 11.30am.

The second concert in the series, on May 19, will feature a string sextet led by Adi Brett playing the glorious opening music from Strauss’ opera, Capriccio. This will be followed by the first of Brahms’s string sextets, in Bb major Op.18 – a sunny and positive work composed during one of the happier periods of Brah ms’s life.

To round off the series, on June 30, there will be a flute and harp recital featuring the principal flute of the Halle – Katherine Baker, and Halle harpist Marie Leenhardt. This programme promises to be colourful and varied, including music by the French composer Ibert, and the master of tango, Piazzolla.

Tickets, including coffee and cake, are priced £11.50 and £9.50 per concert, or £28 and £23 for the series.

They are available from High Street Books, New Mills, or can be reserved at Spring Bank Arts Centre on 01663 308202.
